Collaging “Flip Flops”

A short story about my process:

The thing that I think makes these collage pieces interesting are the layers and layers of paper I build up. I work very fast at first.

In this particular one, I didn't know what I was going to do. I was inspired by the colors. It started to be reminiscent of the beach. Especially since I found the word beach while I was digging through my scraps. I often use this synchronicity to develop a theme.

I loved that little red ball. I especially liked that it went off the page. I added a starfish and some swirling water, fully knowing I may eventually cover these things up with more paper. They are still part of the rich story that is developing in my head about what the collage is about.

I think of it as developing the character. Eventually my process slows down and becomes more intentional as I commit to developing what I see.

After flip flopping this picture to add more paper, I made the decision that flip flops on beach would be perfect! And the viewer is ready to step in.

This collage process is sort of metaphorical to how I am approaching life a moment in time. And in a weirdly bizarre way the image solidifies that moment. The resulting image, never seems to be entirely mine; never completely owned by my own intent. It is more like a call and response with my materials. Just as the physical world is not of my creation: my art is an interaction with the creation that is given, and my choices to respond and utilize what is there.

I LOVE your process AND the end result!! I will see you at Sebastopol Center for the Arts for the reception for 'Not Just Landscape'. Diane

Emilie,
I first heard about you and your work in October of 2022 from your husband, Pat, who was my physical therapist at the Sutter Hospital in Novato where I was recovering from my second hip replacement!!! His smart phone sharing of you "torn pieces" were compelling...to me with an art background and to me as the co-clerk of the ART CORRIDOR COMMITTEE of Friends House where I have been living since late 2000!!!
___________
Fast forward to TODAY......your work and your approach to your work are still very compelling and feed my creative juices to a tee!!! Having you do an EXHIBIT sometime at Friends House is most on my mind. QUESTION: would you possibly be interested in this? Even a qualified "maybe" would be MOST WELCOMED. I would need to share some particulars....venue map of the hall way and a consent form, etc....so at your convenience please be back in touch at (707) 576-6615 or email me back.
All very best regards to you and Pat....who may or may not remember the encounter!!!
Lynn Johnson - age 88!!

P.S. Friends House is in Santa Rosa, California.....684 Benicia Dr., Santa Rosa 95409, CA...and has been since 1984!!!
